"HiperLAN2 operates in the dedicated spectrum in the 5 GHz band. It provides connections, which can be assigned a specific QoS over the air between the terminal and the base station. Whilst moving, HiperLAN2 automatically performs handover to the nearest base station (called access point). H2 also has strong security support including both authentication and encryption and has a built-in facility for automatic frequency allocation, removing the need for manual frequency planning."
Wireless LANs provide all the functionality of wired LANs, but without the physical constraints of the wire itself. Wireless LAN configurations include independent networks, offering peer-to-peer connectivity, and infrastructure networks, supporting fully distributed data communications. Point-to-point local-area wireless solutions, such as LAN-LAN bridging and personal-area networks (PANs), may overlap with some WLAN applications but fundamentally address different user needs. A wireless LAN-LAN bridge is an alternative to cable that connects LANs in two separate buildings. A wireless PAN typically covers the few feet surrounding a useršs work space and provides the ability to synchronize computers, transfer files, and gain access to local peripherals.
The Wireless LAN Alliance (WLANA) is a non-profit consortium of wireless LAN vendors established to help educate the market place about wireless LANs and their uses. WLANA develops educational materials about wireless LAN users' experiences, applications and industry trends.
